A year of big challenges and bigger achievements

I am delighted to present Pensar’s end of year wrap-up for 2022. Remarkably, this has been a year of considerable growth and achievement for Pensar – despite the volatile economic climate, the continuing logistical challenges associated with the pandemic, and numerous floods throughout the regions where we work. My thanks and congratulations to our people, clients, suppliers and partners for their continued support and hard work.

2022 saw the launch of P2 Infrastructure – a strategic partnership between Pensar and the international advisory and management company, the Palladium Group, which delivers social, economic and sustainable development initiatives in more than 90 countries. With a novel combination of connections and capabilities, P2 has the vision and capacity to deliver critical community infrastructure throughout the Asia-Pacific Region. P2 is currently delivering its first project – upgrading Republic of Fiji Naval Squadron infrastructure in Walu Bay, Suva. Delivered on behalf of NAVFAC Pacific – the local arm of the US Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command – this is a valuable pilot project to demonstrate P2’s infrastructure delivery capability. It’s also a great demonstration of the potential of delivering Pensar’s skills offshore.

Marine infrastructure has been an increasingly busy field for Pensar in 2022. Building on the success of projects such as the Macleay Island Marine Landing Facility, Pensar is now delivering works for the Port of Brisbane, Sea Link, Department of Transport and Main Roads and Marine Safety Queensland, and partnering with The Jetty Specialists for the Southern Moreton Bay Island Ferry Terminal Upgrade project.

Pensar continues to do important work and make great advances in recycled water. We have been working closely with the City of Gold Coast, designing and delivering a major recycled water network. This includes the Merrimac recycled water treatment plant and 10 km pipeline reticulation. We are now more than halfway through delivering the Wamuran Irrigation Scheme – the groundbreaking water reuse and sustainable irrigation strategy we spearheaded. We’ve been working on the project in collaboration with Piñata Farms, Twin View Turf and Unitywater since 2019. The $100 million project sees Pensar designing and building a network of pipelines, pump stations and reservoirs to deliver recycled water from the Caboolture wastewater treatment plant to the Wamuran Valley some 25 km away. The system will deliver more than 2.5 gigalitres of Class A water per year to the region’s growers – reusing a valuable resource and diverting discharge from local river systems.

2022 saw Pensar scale up to deliver mega projects. We completed the first stage construction works associated with a major upgrade and expansion of the Ravenswood Gold Mine in North Queensland. This included building a dam 40 times the size of the MCG, with a gabion wall that has the volume of four Olympic swimming pools. Pensar has gone from strength to strength at Ravenswood – our commission continues to expand as our team demonstrates great results and builds upon a strong relationship with Ravenswood Gold.

Concurrent large scale projects like Ravenswood Gold and the Wamuran Irrigation Scheme demonstrate Pensar’s potential to tackle giants while continuing to maintain our focus on our core infrastructure design, construction and sustaining capital work.

We continue to deliver and maintain critical community infrastructure throughout regional Queensland. We greatly value the work we do with utilities providers, local councils and the communities they represent. They’re the backbone and lifeblood of regional Australia and are at the heart of Pensar.

Pensar’s power division delivered several significant electrical design and construct projects in Central Queensland throughout the year. We look forward to building on the success of these in 2023 as we continue to grow our electrical design and construction capability.

2022 saw Pensar’s interstate operations making considerable strides in New South Wales and Tasmania. We have several projects running throughout the NSW Central Coast and Hunter Valley. We recently commenced the upgrade of UV disinfection units across five existing wastewater treatment plants for Taswater. We now have dedicated personnel in NSW and we’re in the process of recruiting a Tasmania area manager.

Once again in 2022, Pensar is proud to support Traction – a homegrown social enterprise that seeks to engage and empower young people in need. Participants have the opportunity to restore and repurpose disused bicycles in a supportive, hands-on learning environment. Our Director of Water, Pat Newell, took part in the fourth annual Traction CEO Bike Build this year. All bikes built on the day were donated to Traction programs. The event raised an impressive $146,362, which will enable more young people throughout South East Queensland to participate in future Traction programs.

This year, we conducted a refresh of the Pensar brand and an overhaul of our website. Our branding and web presence provide the foundation for communicating who we are, what we do and the great results we deliver for our clients and their communities.

This year, for the first time, Pensar entered the Telstra Best of Business Awards. We were delighted to make it to the third round. But just as important as the awards themselves was the process of entering. It was a great exercise for us to reflect, recap and share the story of the evolution of Pensar since I started the business in 2000. It’s hugely rewarding and inspiring for us as a team to see how far we’ve come in that time.

Pensar has recorded outstanding growth over the past year. Both our revenue and our team have grown by 50 per cent. Pensar currently employs around 200 people throughout eastern Australia.

It’s a credit to Pensar’s people, clients and partners that we’ve been able to navigate the challenges of the past year with such success. My thanks and congratulations to one and all. I look forward to continuing to work with you all in an even bigger and better 2023.

Cheers
