About the project

The Alpine Shire Council engaged Pensar for the complete upgrade of an existing bridge in Myrtleford. The upgrade increased the load limit to safely accommodate heavy vehicles.

Location

Myrtleford, Victoria

Client & Duration

Alpine Shire Council
April 2019 - October 2019

Project Scope

  • The cleaning and preparation of concrete surfaces including abutments, crossheads and piers
  • Identification and repair of concrete spalls to crossheads
  • Installation of CFRP strengthening system using carbon fibre fabric
  • Application of an anti-carbonation coating to abutments, crossheads and piers
  • Installation of laminate and rods to 8 crossheads

Challenges

  • Extreme weather conditions caused continual moisture seeping through the roadway from above the structure
  • Works were to be completed with minimal disruption to local residents by maintaining access for the duration of the project
  • Identified a flaw in the design that required a collaborative solution

Achievements

  • Despite extreme weather conditions, the project remained on schedule
  • Managed to control and redirect the flow of water to enable drying of crossheads to proceed with works
  • Bridge remained open with no disruptions to traffic or pedestrians
  • Worked collaboratively with the client to create an alternative design that achieved the desired outcome
  • The scaffold system was customised to allow access to areas requiring strengthening
