Herston Quarter Redevelopment
About the project
The Herston Quarter Redevelopment involved a major intersection upgrade which required the design of new sewer and water infrastructure, identification of major optic fibre network carriers and the identification and potential relocation of the trunk network gas main.
Location
Herston, Qld
Client & Duration
Australian Unity
April 2019 - May 2020
Project Scope
- Quality Level B investigation on all existing utilities throughout the project, to enable a preliminary design
- The preliminary design enabled Pensar to target the existing utilities for potholing that were in conflict with the various design elements of the project
- Set up and Management of Major traffic permits and controls
Challenges
- Communication with local stakeholders was required due to the close proximity to the Royal Brisbane Hospital (RBH)
- Access for all RBH staff was to be maintained throughout the project, which meant elaborate traffic management plans and additional traffic controllers to guide staff through the site safely
- Emergency vehicle access was to be maintained through site at all times, requiring police control
- Pensar discovered a large amount of undocumented utilities onsite
- Due to the project's close proximity to the RBH and as per the client's requirements, our time on site was limited. Multiple crews were working in close proximity to get the project completed on time
Achievements
- Undocumented utilities were located and potholed accurately to be incorporated into the design - this assisted the designers in their correspondence with the affected utility owners, to notify them of required protection or possible relocations
- Pensar's utility reports assisted the designers in meeting their Utility Owner's Duty of Care
- Completed the project within the tight time frame and on budget despite the additional staff, traffic control and permit requirements
- Good communication between the Metro North, Herston Quarter and Pensar staff ensured the traffic control closures and requirements were well communicated and executed
- No complaints from the client, due to effective communication
