NSI Filters Upgrade
About the project
Pensar was engaged to improve filter performance and reliability as well as providing safe access to the filters for maintenance activities.
Location
North Stradbroke Island, Queensland
Client & Duration
Seqwater
July 2020 - September 2020
Project Scope
- Design, fabrication and installation of new aluminium walkways, access platforms and davit arm bases to enable access to each filter bay
- Removal of existing coal media layer and supply and placement of new coal
- Disinfection and commissioning of the filters
Challenges
- Detailed planning was required to ensure all resources, plant and materials were available onsite when needed due to the site's island location. There was no room for delays
- An exclusion zone was required during crane lifts over the operations building. Constant communication ensured all personnel remained outside the exclusion zone
- Only two filters could be worked on and completed at any one time, so the works were staged. There was no flexibility to adjust walkways or platforms after installation was complete
Achievements
- Pensar delivered the complete design and construct project in-house
- Pre-assembly of the walkway required only a single crane lift onsite, reducing the amount of hotworks, due to the innovation of Pensar's modular design
- The design fulfilled DWQ requirements by having a 1% fall across the solid top walkway, draining away from filters
