North Pine WTP Ammonia Pipeline and Pressure Relief
About the project
The ammonia dosing pipework at North Pine WTP was past its life expectancy and required replacement to prevent risk failure. Pensar completed the design and construction of new ammonia dosing pipework from the ammonia storage room to the injection point.
Location
North Pine, Queensland
Client & Duration
Seqwater
August 2023 - March 2024
Project Scope
- Complete process, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical and controls design for the new ammonia dosing pipework
- Removal and disposal of existing aqueous ammonia dosing pipework
- Installation of duty/standby double contained pipework from the bund to the injection point
- Installation of conduits for ammonia dosing lines
- Excavation of below ground portion of aqueous ammonia dosing pipework and installation of conduits with access pits
- Installation of leak detection/telltales, draining and vents as required
- Installation of new ammonia dosing cabinet in the field
- Testing and commissioning of the new pipework.
Challenges
- Dealing and working around ammonia, which is classified as a hazardous chemical
- As ammonia is a hazardous chemical, everything had to be designed for a hazardous environment
- Working at a live plant required significant planning for isolations and consistent coordination with the site operations team to minimise impacts to site operations.
Achievements
- Working with collaboratively with Seqwater and our design partners, Pensar selected to use dual contained hoses with leak detection for this project. This pipe can detect a leak and provide virtually immediate notification on SCADA through the alarm system. In the unlikely event of a dosing hose failure, the liquid will be be contained within the secondary pipe, which makes for a safer operating system
- The commissioning was performed on an operational site which required significant coordination with the site operations team to plan and implement any changes.
