Moura Raw Water Pump Station
About the project
Pensar was engaged to increase the Moura Raw Water Pump Station’s instantaneous flow. The Banana Shire Council also required a solution to retrieve the pumps from the river during a Q100 flood without having to work over water.

Project Scope

Challenges
- The Dawson River experiences significant fluctuations in its water level due to a large catchment area and upstream weirs. The river level rose 3m within two weeks of mobilising and another 2m within the following two weeks. This created logistical challenges in mobilising and de-mobilising the barge-mounted piling rig, diving works, and onshore works
- The regional location of the project required careful coordination of local and other contractors to ensure continuity of work for all trades
Achievements
- As well as doubling the pump station’s flow capacity from 50L/s to 100L/s, the refined design eliminated the hazard of working over water and provided additional drought resilience with lower intake levels
- The pump station gained the capability to operate under Q100 flood conditions, improving flood resilience of the raw water supply
- Pensar designed a custom hose reeling machine and pump catch tray to enable the pumps to be pulled from the depths of the river and be maintained without having to be disconnected from the flexible rising main
- Submersible level probes were installed in inclined conduits, enabling them to be retrieved from the riverbank, again eliminating the need to work over water
