Kooralbyn Raw Water Pump Station
About the project
Pensar was engaged for the mechanical, civil and electrical construction and commissioning of a new raw water intake structure so as to provide continuous raw water supply to Kooralbyn WTP.
Location
Kooralbyn, Queensland
Client & Duration
Seqwater
Oct 2022 - Aug 2023
Project Scope
- Construction of a new 3.6m diameter 8m deep concrete raw water pump station via caisson methodology, including new concrete inlet structure Concrete and finishing works, including a new 15m long mass block retaining wall
- Mechanical and electrical fit out of new pump station
- Integration and SCADA updates
- Extension of the existing elevated HDG switchboard platform and installation of new Hydroburst inlet screen backwash system
- Switchboard improvements to bring existing switchboard up to current Australian Standards
- Commissioning of the new raw water pump station
- Decommissioning and demolition of the existing pump station and inlet
- Design and construction of new access road gully crossing and access road improvements.
Challenges
- Working alongside the Logan River which is highly sensitive to flooding and upstream dam releases
- The site of the new pump station was extremely steep and washed out, requiring temporary works' platforms and sheet piles to be installed to facilitate construction
- Construction of the new inlet structure after the caisson pump station had been installed meant limited access for machinery. This required upfront planning to stage excavations to ensure works could be completed
- Unknown structures/pipework from previous inlet structures were encountered requiring changes to temporary works and methodologies on the go, to ensure program was met and safety was maintained at all times
- The old structure was decommissioned, demolished and removed from site.
Achievements
- The project had been attempted by a previous contractor years prior which meant the documentation supplied by Seqwater had not been updated correctly. Pensar completed a GAP analysis to align all design documentation and ensure the program was maintained
- Given the difficult site and poor ground conditions the pump station construction was completed on program
- Any issues on site were communicated openly and promptly to Seqwater ensuring problems were solved quickly and there were no surprises
- Seqwater's operations team provided extremely positive feedback on the quality of finish and ease of working with Pensar.
