Hammond Island Water Reticulation Upgrade
About the project
Pensar was engaged to deliver an essential upgrade to heavily dilapidated water infrastructure on Hammond Island.
Location
Hammond Island, Torres Strait
Client & Duration
Torres Strait Regional Council
February 2020 - April 2020
Project Scope
- Supply of materials, aggregates and equipment to Hammond Island
- Installation of new water main
- Decommissioning of existing main
- Testing
- Property connections and live connections
- Service location
- Construction of concrete structures
Challenges
- The remote location of the site made sourcing materials challenging. Front end procurement was required, making order accuracy highly important. All stock travelled by barge from Cairns to Hammond Island
- The front-end procurement resulted in high upfront costs and required detailed financial management
- On arrival to site all regional locations were forced into COVID-19 lockdown and sites closed
Achievements
- Project completed 6 weeks ahead of programme
- Where possible, Pensar procured materials and labour locally
- The site location and front-end procurement required high level time management to organise barges, wharf space, quarries and transport companies
- Pensar suggested solutions and controls to the client, proving our competency to deliver the project during the pandemic. The project was approved to continue, with the team remaining in the community for the duration of the project
- Due to COVID-19, the team batched and sampled their own work to send to Cairns for testing. Hydrostatic Pressure Testing and QA was completed via video
- The Pensar site team built positive relationships with the local community
