Days Road and Kedron Brook Road Intersection
About the project
The project required replacement of the existing roundabout with a signalised intersection and pedestrian crossings to improve traffic efficiency and increase safety for all road users.
Location
Grange/Wilston, Queensland
Client & Duration
Brisbane City Council
June 2018 - October 2018
Project Scope
- Demolition of existing roundabout island and replacement with a temporary roundabout
- Installation of new traffic signals with controlled pedestrian/cycle crossing lanterns
- Construction of slip lanes and median strips
- Installation of bicycle lanes, kerb ramps and pavements
- Installation of 145m of drainage lines
- All associated lane and other line markings
Challenges
- The intersection is a major traffic thoroughfare in peak hour
- A popular city-to-suburbs cycle route passes directly through the intersection
- Pedestrian access to two schools in the vicinity had to be maintained
- The original staging plan required significant night-works, including high-noise works, near residential homes
- Noise restrictions were tightened after contract
- Historic concrete tram tracks were discovered below Days Rd during initial project stages
Achievements
- Pensar’s experience enabled early identification of alternative staging to minimise disruption – this approach was accepted by Council
- To reduce noise impact, the team scheduled weekend works, and implemented traffic detours so major works could be completed in daylight hours
- Works and traffic access were re-planned around historical tram tracks
- Asphalt and drainage works were completed ahead of schedule –reducing overall disruption
- The project was completed ahead of plan
