Cairns Reservoir Refurbishments
About the project
To meet the current and projected water supply demands, Pensar was engaged for the upgrades of the existing Henley’s Hill, White’s Gap and Janett Street reservoirs. Cairns Regional Council’s main objective was to increase the service capacity and security of supply, as part of the water network upgrade.

Project Scope
- Temporary works, repair and replacement of various members of the reservoir, including roof components, vents, box gutters, access hatches and ladders
- Application of protective coatings on rafters, preparation of concrete, crack injection, installation of internal liner, external coatings, remediation of corroded pipework and replacement of internal seals
- Reconstruction of access roads, kerbs and drainage
Challenges
- 3D survey and scanning was performed via a floating work platform to ensure an accurate design for the prefabricated components. This was completed during summer to enable the shutdown periods to fall in winter
- Due to the magnitude of the coating works, the program pushed into spring which triggered a 24-hour split
shift roster involving day and night works. Pensar efficiently managed the working away from home teams to complete this stage
Achievements
- Pensar efficiently coordinated all scope tasks, working closely with Cairns Regional Council to ensure that the project remained on budget and works were completed within the designated asset maintenance periods
- Strong community and business engagement delivering social and financial benefits to the local community
