Beams Road No. 3 Pump Station
About the project
To remove the risk of overflow, Pensar was engaged to construct and commission a gravity main to replace the existing pump system.
Location
Carseldine, Queensland
Client & Duration
Urban Utilities
April 2018 - November 2018
Project Scope
- Installation of 250m of gravity sewer between the existing pump station and new maintenance holes
- Installation (via open trench) of 40m of new gravity sewer in Pat Rafter Park to connect to an existing maintenance hole
- Installation of a sewer maintenance hole at the Beams Rd/Wimbledon Circuit intersection
- Decommissioning and demolition of the existing pump station
- Decommissioning of the 680m of existing rising main
- Protection, rehabilitation and remediation of construction areas
Challenges
- The system had to remain live throughout
- An adjacent creek had to be protected from discharge and run-off
- Specific permits were needed to facilitate works within the Pat Rafter Park environment
- Limited on-site construction space, meant tunnel boring was difficult
- Traffic control along Beams Rd presented a major risk
- Implementation of a by-pass to the pump station with 24-hour monitoring
- Deep excavations and confined space working conditions
Achievements
- Bi-directional traffic flow was maintained by relocating a traffic island
- Enabled safe and efficient construction and installation of the GRP manhole, and interconnection of carrier pipes, by constructing a large temporary caisson
- Saved a large fig and other native trees by using tunnel boring rather than open excavation
- No lost time injuries whilst working in a high risk environment
- Completed the project ahead of schedule and on budget
