Aubinville STP Electrical Upgrade
About the project
The Aubinville Sewage Treatment Plant is the sole wastewater treatment plant for the regional community and commercial centre of Maryborough in Queensland’s Fraser Coast Region. Owned and operated by Fraser Coast Regional Council, the plant serves around 25,000 residents plus commercial and industrial operations.
A recent large-scale upgrade has brought the ageing plant up to current standards. As the sole wastewater treatment plant for the Maryborough region, continuity of operation and minimal disruption were critical for Fraser Coast Regional Council. Pensar worked closely with Fraser Coast Regional Council to completely overhaul the electrical infrastructure and instrumentation technology for the Aubinville Sewage Treatment Plant.

Project Scope
- Complete electrical, instrumentation and communication systems design
- Installation and commissioning of the new sections of the plant
- Installation and commissioning of a new switchroom, generator, PLC upgrade with new fibre, and decommissioning of existing communications
- Upgrades to existing infrastructure including switchboards, communications and instrumentation.
Challenges
- Complete design and integration was required between the existing plant and new upgraded sections
- Installation of the new switchboards and switchroom in the new plant, whilst integrating the existing electrical services with minimal changeover windows for equipment
- Changeover of the Energex service location from the existing aerial supply to a new pad mounted transformer
- Completing the cutover and new works in an existing live plant
- Creation of design and functional description for control systems within the new plant, including integration to the existing.
Achievements
- Pensar successfully managed technical, operational and scheduling challenges to maintain continuous operation of the plant and deliver a smooth transition to the new systems. We also successfully managed multiple project delays and changes associated with the separate construction contract and phase of the upgrade
- Technical improvements delivered as part of this project – such as upgraded switchboards, arc fault containment and failsafe measures – have created a healthier and safer working environment for Fraser Coast Regional Council, plant personnel and all working with the Aubinville Sewage Treatment Plant
- The Aubinville Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade has delivered a cleaner, greener, more efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment plant for the client, community and natural environment.
