Airside Electrification Stage 1
About the project
To support Brisbane Airport Corporation’s initiative to convert all airport utility vehicles to electric powered, Pensar was engaged to construct EV charging stations as part
of Stage 1 of this initiative.
Location
Brisbane, Queensland
Client & Duration
Brisbane Airport Corporation
Jun 2024 - Dec 2024
Project Scope
- Running cable tray from EV charger switchboards to the international terminal main power supply to obtain HV supply
- Running cable from distribution boards to EV chargers including termination of cable at main switchboard and distribution
boards - Supply, installation and commissioning of distribution boards and EV chargers
- Construction of a new concrete pad, landscaping, and demolition and reinstatement of a new barrier kerb to dovetail in with the existing
- A new subgrade and asphalt, and completion of line marking to new BAC EV specification.
Challenges
- Working airside meant our foreman required driver training in order to drive when on airside. Our team were also required to obtain ASIC cards to enter site without security
supervision. ASIC holders were able to organise visitor passes for any non-ASIC holding site attendees and their vehicles. This took time and our team had to mitigate impacting the program, with some permits taking up to 30 minutes - Height restrictions meant that the asphalting machines weren’t able to fit under the terminal structure and were required to be diverted through an alternative entrance under the
supervision of Brisbane Airport security - Airport security was required to open the site gate for all personnel entering and exiting the premise. As they were only available between 10am and 4pm, our team had to meticulously plan works and deliveries to ensure it was between this timeframe.
Achievements
- Our team was able to commission the chargers ahead of an already tight program
- Any issues that arose were dealt with quickly and effectively, with clear communication to all project stakeholders.
