Pensar Celebrates 20 Years of Delivering Trusted Community Infrastructure

February 24th, 2020 is a celebratory milestone for us at Pensar: it marks the day, 20 years ago when our vision first came to fruition. In my last article, I spent some time reflecting on our journey to reach this exciting point in our business’ growth. I explained how 2019 was a foundation year for us; the coming together of a whole range of elements including new capabilities across all divisions, creating and implementing a sound business strategy, and expanding the volume and complexity of projects we’ve undertaken.

We developed significant industry recognition during 2019 and I am predicting that we are really going to see the business benefit from all our steadfast efforts. I am really excited about 2020 and beyond.

The establishment of two new workstreams has resulted in greater agility in servicing existing Pensar clients, and has also triggered a reduction in the amount of work the business outsources.

  • Concrete Rehabilitation – headed up by Craig McPhillips, working with Structures Director Tim Down. This is seen as a massive longer-term opportunity, not just in Queensland but right across Australia. We have recognised the necessity for asset life extension within the concrete rehabilitation business and for the past 18 months we have really been focusing on building our own capability and gaining industry recognition in this sector.
  • Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) – through the use of state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, the SUE team has already helped many project owners, managers, engineers, designers and utility providers mitigate risk and avoid unnecessary and costly utility relocation. The end result for clients has been a faster turnaround on projects, and the avoidance of unforeseen incremental costs.

Exploring niche markets has become a key focus in Pensar’s strategy going forward. Our teams of technical experts have been exploring a range of new opportunities such as complicated civil works that require special design input, detailed storm water projects and airfields that require specialised concrete surfaces.

One of the real tests for any business is how much you would be missed if for some reason, you closed the doors. In other words, how unique is your service offering? How easily could a rival business step in and fill the void? If the answer is “very easily”, in my view the business model – or at least the strategy – is largely flawed. We want to get to the point where our clients depend on us. We want to be irreplaceable, and the best way we can do that is to employ and develop technical experts – people who are the leaders in their field.

Our focus on our people is one of the aspects of our business that I believe sets Pensar apart from our competitors. Each person in our team plays a vital role in the Pensar promise of consistently delivering on expectations. We invest in building a high-quality workforce that aligns with our culture. The culture of our business is central to everything we do. In 2020, there is a focus on the younger generation: being smart about how we get them more engaged in the direction and strategy of the business. This is important as they are the future leaders of the business. Now is the time to cultivate fresh thinking and new ideas that can be added to our long-standing industry expertise.

Reflecting on the last 20 years is an important launchpad for the next 20. You can read more on this in our news article Bright future ahead as Pensar approaches the celebration of its 20th year.

I am excited about our future. There is so much more we still want to do in terms of broadening our technical capabilities, geographical reach and the industries we operate in, all driven by our team’s motivation for new challenges. My ultimate goal is to build a business that stands the test of time, a business that is still going strong not just in five or 10 years but in 40 and 50 years’ time.
